European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre
During 2009, SEGEC played a vital role in unlocking the potential for the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre.
The proposed windfarm in Aberdeen Bay has been under discussion since 2005, with AREG and Vattenfall as the key long term partners leading the development. In early 2009, following a strategic review, SEGEC took responsibility for enabling €40 million EU grant funding into a revised £200m scheme, comprising both a novel windfarm and a deployment centre for offshore wind technologies.
SEGEC employed an interim project team to develop the EU bid and refine the plans for the centre itself, including the introduction of potential new investors to the project and resolving a potential blocking situation with the maritime community, whilst continuing with environmental studies. This culminated in the announcement in early 2010 that Technip would join the project as an industrial partner, working with Vattenfall and AREG to deliver the scheme, which offers the prospect of significant opportunities to Scottish based technology providers for Offshore wind, supported with EU funds.
The project direction was "handed back" to Vattenfall, Technip and AREG in May 2010 to complete the negotiations with EU and drive the scheme forward to a successful conclusion. Environmental studies continue with the intent to submit an application for Section 36 approval later this year and construction expected to take place in 2011/12.
This model of intensive engagement to enable progress, engage with EU and others and innovate to solve problems and create potential partnerships is core to the aims of SEGEC and demonstrates a flexibility of working and deep industry knowledge delivering value for Scotland.
