SET-Plan & European Industrial Initiatives

The Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan) was adopted by the EU in 2008 to and is implemented via the European Industrial Initiatives (EIIs). It aims to increase, coordinate and focus EU support on key low-carbon energy technologies and provides a framework to accelerate the development and deployment of cost-effective low carbon technologies.

The EIIs aim to strengthen energy research and innovation by bringing together appropriate resources and sector players at an EU, Memberstate and industry level. The EIIs were proposed by the Commission in 2008, and the launch of the first EIIs is scheduled for 2010-2011.

Areas covered by the The six proposed EIIs include

The EIIs differ from the FP7 Joint Technology Initiatives in that they will be implemented in different ways, depending on the nature and needs of the technologies and sector. Technologies with an established industrial base, public-private partnerships may be more relevent, whereas technologies which are prioritised by only a few member states will benefit from joint programming by coalitions of the interested Member States.
